In 2012, 21st Century Dissenters gathered under an urban apple tree in a Stoke Newington garden. We discussed the many local nonconformists who were here before and how, drawing on their distinguished freethinking traditions, we might arrange cultural activities of all kinds for today’s community. And, in particular, celebrate the creativity of women.
Since then, our mission has been an inspiring story of dedicated hard work, devising an increasing variety of artistic, musical and educational events, and delight at ever-growing audiences. But there’s still much more to be done.
We believe nobody should miss out on creative arts opportunities due to social or economic circumstances and therefore we have set up a charity Dissenters Arts N16 to offer members of our community the chance to discover their creativity, talents and inspiration.
We have established a focus for cultural activities at St Matthias Church (and St Matthias Hall) in Wordsworth Road, N16. This beautiful Grade I listed building with its magnificent acoustic hugely deserves to be used and enjoyed more by us all. We are deeply grateful to Father David Lambert for his warm welcome.
And if you are interested in learning how events work, either through helping set up, doing front of house or behind the bar, we are always interested in hearing from volunteers.
As well as presenting events to remember, we are hiring out the church as is a gorgeous space to make YOUR event memorable, and the hall as a blank canvas for filming, rehearsals, classes and supervised activities. Visit the St Matthias Halls website and for photos, dimensions and prices.
