St Matthias – The Musical!
Maggie Steed is our narrator at the world premiere of St Matthias – The Musical! exploring the extraordinary history of St Matthias Church in Stoke Newington.
On the watercress beds of the fields beneath, church architect and gothic revivalist William Butterfield builds his first London Church along the boundary of what was then known as Cut Throat Lane. Alongside local financier Robert Brett, who was concerned that Stoke Newington had become ‘a neighbourhood overrun with Dissent’, he raised the funds needed to save the souls of the area’s increasing population.
But what of the Dissenters? And organist William Monk? And two World Wars; the second of which almost finished the church for good.
Come and be overrun with Maggie Steed, Chorus of Dissent and the Elastic Band as 180 years of history breaks out of the archives and into song! If you care about N16 and our collective past, present and future this is an event not to be missed.
